Call for papers: Identity, Security, Democracy: Challenges for Public Law

The International Society of Public Law (ICON.S) has recently opened an initiative to gain a higher profile for administrative law within the relatively new organisation. In connection with this, a group headed by Joana Mendes, Professor of Comparative Administrative Law in the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg, is promoting some administrative law panels and/ or papers for their 2018 Annual Meeting on ‘Identity, Security, Democracy: Challenges for Public Law’, which will take place in Hong Kong on 25-27 June 2018 (it is advertised here).

Some panel themes have already been submitted. They include comparative administrative law perspectives on:

Identity
– cultural foundations of administrative law
– administrative rights: citizens and foreigners
– economic protectionism (e.g. trade barriers)

Security
– the emergency state and administrative law measures

Democracy
– administrative democracy
– the constitutional status of the administrative state

– administrative law and authoritarianism

The call for papers is open until 31st of January and further panel suggestions could be made. Although panels are comparative in the sense that panel members come from different jurisdictions, papers need not necessarily be comparative in character; indeed, submissions on regional organisations and jurisdictions are very welcome. Nor need contributors necessarily be lawyers.

The group is also very much interested in stimulating contributions on administrative justice, obviously a central area of interest for all administrative lawyers on a national, regional or global basis. Here colleagues who follow UKAJI are particularly well-placed to contribute.

The group is looking for people who might be interested in organising a panel for Hong Kong or in joining with others to contribute a paper. Organisers would not necessarily be expected to go to Hong Kong.
